Clearly there are some negative repercussions to this pastime. Outside of destroying his Restoration Hardware crib, of course. The "did you eat paint chips as a child" saying originated somewhere.

Continually balance the biological inclination to rear offspring (ingrained over the last 4 mil. years) with the pursuit of a career (over the last 50 years). Floss, Mani, Pedi, get your hair did. Attend regular Pilates and/or other new wave workout sessions. Take daily supplements then kick yourself for not drinking 8 glasses of water. Dates with the girls and keep up-to-date on current events. Witty banter. Keep wild inclination to run away to Tuscany in check. Appear glam and polished while accomplishing all aforementioned tasks

Larkin did this too...I bought fabric crib rail covers...it wasn't too attractive but it saved her from eating paint and the rail from having any more damage!!
